Intro to German Longsword

Cost: $120
Location: Midnapore or Lake Bonavista
Next session: Please fill out our contact form to inquire.
Prerequisite: None
This is where to begin if you have no experience with weapon-based martial arts!
Introduction to Medieval Longsword mostly focuses on the Lichtenauer and Meyer traditions of historical sword fighting with a sword for two hands known as a longsword.
You will learn the foundational practices of HEMA including: breathing, balance, footwork, the proper angles for attacks, and see how European martial arts aligns with physics, geometry, and biology (bet you weren’t expecting that!).
This course will give you everything you need to find your footing, improve your fitness and challenge your mind!
No equipment needed.
For safety and to avoid injury, the minimum age to join is 14 years old.
'Meisterhau' — Meyer’s Master Cuts
Duration: Six-Weeks (Six 90-minute sessions)
Cost: $120
Location: Midnapore or Lake Bonavista
Next session: Please fill out our contact form to inquire.
Prerequisite: Intro to German Longsword
For students who have completed Introduction to German Longsword and want more (MORE!) longsword, we then move on to the Meisterhau, or the ‘Master Cuts’ based on Meyer’s 1568 and 1570 treatises.
In this class, students transform the basic ideas of sword fighting into more efficient moves while helping them understand how to create a true (and unique) fight style with advanced techniques.
Each class is dedicated to one subject, building on previous sessions.
Hand protection required.
(ex. Lacrosse gloves, construction gloves, thick craftsman gloves)
Monday Mixed — Rotating Weapon Courses
Duration: Four-Months Session
Cost: $85/month
Location: Midnapore
Next session: Please fill out our contact form to inquire.
Prerequisite: TBD
An advanced class that rotates through a variety of weapon styles in four-month blocks.
This class is a study group as much as a training class, and really gets into the details of various HEMA fighting systems.
Past rotations have included Italian Rapier, Victorian Sabre, Renaissance English Staff, and even bayonet-on-rifle! Future subjects will include Poleaxe, spear, more rapier, and some advanced longsword.
These classes are 90 minutes in length followed by sparring time for those with experience.
Proper HEMA safety equipment is required (please contact us for a complete list).
Saturday Longsword Study Group — the LSG
Duration: Membership Required
Cost: $85/month
Location: Lake Bonavista
Contact us for more info and to join!
Saturdays at CFOS are all about Longsword. For students who have completed 12-18 classes of longsword (usually the Intro, the Meisterhau, and a series called Supplemental Cuts), this weekly study group works on a variety of techniques to continue building a fighting style and prepare for freeplay or even tournament sparring.
Additional requirements: these classes require a 350N fencing mask, gloves as recommended by the instructors, plus additional equipment as required depending on what the member would like to achieve.
Please contact us for a list of required equipment and recommendations.

A lot of fun, a little history, and small classes that allow for an individual experience.
Calgary Fellowship of the Sword is awesome. The classes are engaging and the instructors bring their passion for Historical European Martial Arts to every session. If you've always wanted to learn how to use a sword -- I can't recommend CFOS enough!
My son and I joined the class about a year and a half ago (wow time flies). They have been incredibly welcoming to the both of us and we've both really enjoyed the club. Definitely recommend trying it out!
